How to Use Citationsy for Chrome to Auto-Create References in One Click
What it does
Citationsy for Chrome captures bibliographic details from web pages (articles, books, PDFs, videos) and creates formatted citations you can copy or export.
Quick setup (assumed defaults)
- Install the Citationsy extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Sign in or create a free Citationsy account.
- Optionally connect to your Citationsy library (sync enabled by default).
One‑click citation workflow
- Open the source page you want to cite (journal article, web article, book page, PDF viewer).
- Click the Citationsy extension icon in your browser toolbar.
- The extension auto-detects metadata (title, author, date, DOI/URL).
- Choose a citation style from the dropdown (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
- Click “Cite” (or similar single-button action). Citationsy will generate the formatted reference instantly.
- Copy the citation to clipboard or save it to your Citationsy library for later export.
Tips for best results
- If metadata is missing or incorrect, open the extension and edit fields manually before saving.
- For PDFs, use the page’s metadata or the PDF viewer’s embedded data; if absent, enter details manually.
- Use the extension on publisher pages (CrossRef-enabled) for more accurate DOIs and author lists.
- Create collections in your Citationsy library to organize saved citations by project.
Exporting & using citations
- From your Citationsy library (web app), export in multiple formats: RIS, BibTeX, Word (.docx), or plain text.
- Paste copied citations directly into documents or reference sections.
- For bibliography creation, export a batch of saved citations in the required style and import into your document editor.
Troubleshooting
- If the extension fails to detect metadata, refresh the page or try the site’s article landing page.
- Ensure the extension has permission to access the page.
- Update the extension to the latest version if features are missing.
